Dance and music compilation evening inspired by old folk songs in choreography by Petr Zuska.
Première date: 27th October 2019
Venue: Vinohrady Theatre (Divadlo na Vinohradech) in Prague
Folk songs and poetry and, in fact, all ethnic music, in general, represents a golden thread which goes throughout the entire artistic work of mine since its very beginnings. It is a big source of inspiration for me and I think I will always go back to it. I feel in it an intoxicating sense of our roots, joy and love which go hand in hand with pain and death; a fatal connection to something pure and genuine, something archetypal within us which, thank God, does not easily disappear – not even after centuries.
The evening titled Carmina Vetera (Old Songs) represents just a part of this golden thread of my work. To be more specific, the choreographies Ej Lásko (Oh, Love), Lyrická (Lyrical) and Růže (The Rose) were created between the years 2008 and 2010 for various ensembles and occasions. The brand new female solo will, on the contrary, be the world premiere.
It has been 30 years since I created my first piece. By coincidence, it was a female solo to a folk music, too; to a song written by a contemporary folk music composer Dáša Andrtová-Voňková titled Zpověď (Confession).
What the soloist will be confessing to in the current new piece, this time accompanied by Indian, Irish, Arabic, and Jewish ballads, I will leave to your sensation as an audience.
In the rest of the evening, however, you can enjoy Old Songs of several other cultures, nationalities and times in the interpretation and arrangements of Jiří Pavlica and his Hradišťan music ensemble, ladies’ duo Vyšívanka from Košice and Jiří Tichota with his Spirituál Kvintet ensemble.
